With the number of overseas tourists increasing year by year,tourism has playedan important role in the development of Chinese economy,society and culture.Moreand more people are fascinated by the grotesque landscapes,traditional cultures anddifferent customs overseas.At the same time,tourism has also become a bridge todeepen the mutual understanding between Chinese tourists and other people.Atpresent,most Chinese tourists travel abroad with a group tour,but in fact,the route setby the group tour is not always suitable for each tourist,then the feeling of the tourwould be greatly reduced.Moreover,there are few tour recommendation for people tochoose for limited introduction of foreign tourist attractions provided inChina.However,travelogues can not only show readers the world scenery,but alsogive readers a different view of the world through the author’s angle in the text.Therefore,the translator chose travelogues for translation and completes thetranslation practice report.

The Deepest South of All,written by bestselling travel writer Richard Grant inEnglish and published in 2020,provides comprehensive tourism information aboutNatchez,Mississippi,America.Furthermore,differing from other travel guides,thisbook,“part of history and part of travelogue”in the author’s words,mainly introducesa quirky town with long history,including lots of historical events and racial cultureof the Civil War,which all attracts Chinese tourists.The whole text includes 12,737English characters.Besides,it has been proved that no Chinese translation of thistravelogue was published before the translator began to implement this task.Considering the factors above,this travelogue is selected as the source text of thistranslation task.

1.2 Objectives of the Translation Task

The objectives of the translation task are as follows:

Firstly,it intends to improve the translator’s ability in travelogue translation.Based on the years of study in the university,the translator has mastered sometheories,strategies and skills in translation,but the ability to put them into practice inspecific text needs to be improved.So,the translator expects to make the translationreadable and acceptable,and then receive response from Chinese readers as same asthat from the readers of the source text.

Secondly,it tries to explore the application of the reception aesthetics theory intravelogues.As domestics researches indicates that reception aesthetics theory israrely used to guide the translation of travelogues,this task attempts to prove thefeasibility of reception aesthetics theory in the translation of travelogue text throughspecific cases analysis.

Finally,it encourages more tourists to enjoy different customs and culture in theprocess of globalization.It hopes to provide Chinese readers with more information inthe source text to view the American Civil War,slavery and complex racial issues,tolearn more knowledge about the culture and history of the US,and then to think moreabout slavery and its influence on the local people until today.
