6.1 Major Findings
This study integrates Functional Grammar with Positive Discourse Analysis toform a comprehensive analytical framework,and based on this framework,itanalyzes the chairman’s speech in the Sustainability Report of Chinese and Americanenergy enterprises.Firstly,it compares the distribution of transitivity resources,mood and modality resources and thematic resources in CSSRC and CSSRA,respectively.What follows is the analysis of similar and different kinds of corporateimages constructed through the use of the above resources.Finally,this studydiscusses the contextual factors that contribute to the different corporate imagesconstructed by Chinese and American energy enterprises.
With regard to the first research question,namely,the similarities anddifferences between the distribution of transitivity resources,mood and modalityresources and thematic resources in CSSRC and CSSRA.This study conductsstatistical analysis by using UAM Corpus Tool and chi-square test,and makes thefollowing summary.
From the perspective of similarity,firstly,in terms of the use of transitivityresources,material processes account for the highest proportion in CSSRC andCSSRA.Besides,the subtypes of mental processes are the cognition type,which isrequired by the characteristics of speech texts conveying concepts and objectiveinformation.Secondly,in terms of the use of mood and modality resources,theclauses in CSSRC and CSSRA are both declarative and tend to favor Readiness and Intensity.Finally,in terms of the distribution of textual resources,the distribution ofunmarked themes is similar in CSSRC and CSSRA,occupying the majority of thetheme types.In addition,Chinese and American energy enterprises also have similarusage of marked themes of Time and Manner.
