Chapter 1 Introduction

Virginia Woolf(1882-1941)is celebrated as one of the most eminent novelistsand literary critics in Britain from the late 19th to the early 20th century. She isrevered as a trailblazer in both 20th century modernism and feminism, standingalongside Joyce,Faulkner, and Proust as a seminal figure instream-of-consciousness literature.Besides,Woolf was a pivotal figure inLondon’s literary circles during the World Wars and was also an integral part of theBloomsbury Group. Her notable novels include The Voyage Out(1915),Jacob’sRoom(1920),Mrs.Dalloway(1925),To the Lighthouse(1927),and The Waves(1931),among others.Meanwhile, she also penned influential essays like A Roomof One’s Own(1929),The Common Reader I and The Common Reader II(1925,1933),and Modern Fiction(1919).

Mrs.Dalloway, first published in 1925,standing out as one of Woolf’s mostdistinguished works, portrays a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, aparliamentarian’s wife in post-World War I Britain. The novel’s narrative weaves inand out of the minds of several characters, though it primarily focuses on ClarissaDalloway as she prepares for a party that be hosted that evening. The novelexplores the complexities of Clarissa’s character, her past, her relationships, andher reflections on life and society.Through Clarissa’s thoughts and interactions,Woolf examines the interplay between external events and internal reflections, revealing the profound influences of social norms, personal relationships, andhistorical events on individual psychology.

1.2 Research Objectives and Significance

In Mrs.Dalloway,Woolf masterfully intertwines focalization across differenttime frames, weaving the protagonist’s present and past with the intricacies of thesurroundings into the fabric of Clarissa’s one-day life, painting a vivid tableau ofBritish high-class society.Meanwhile, the narration of this novel, full of innerdialogues and musings of various characters, delving into the psyches of itscharacters,is characterized by variable focalization, complex character speech, andintricate unreliable narration for the subjective perceptions and memories ofcharacters sometimes deviate from objective reality, brimming with tension anddemonstrating Woolf’s exceptional narrative prowess which is indispensable topresent in translation version as well.

Therefore, this study selects the two Chinese translations of Mrs.Dalloway asits research subjects and approaches the analysis from a narratological perspective, primarily aiming to explore, firstly, the presentation of the three crucial narrativeelements in translation:whether the two translations present the original narrativefocalization and character speech and unreliable narration successfully, whichtranslator more effectively demonstrates the original narrative techniques, andsecondly, the resultant effects of the translators’modifications on the narrative, last but not least, suggestions for translating stream-of-consciousness novels intoChinese, considering the three narrative elements.
